A Guide to using the RRL booklists
The following information is intended to help parents make the best use of the Recommended Reading Lists (RRL) and (RRL-A), to encourage developing a lifelong love of reading in children.
What are the Kumon Recommended Reading Lists?
The Kumon Recommended Reading List (RRL) is a list of 380 books created to help Kumon students find books that they will enjoy reading, and to encourage them to read books from a wide range of genres and styles. It contains books from many countries all around the world.
The Kumon Recommended Reading List – Australian supplement (RRL-A) is an additional list of 130 books written by Australian authors created specifically to excite interest in reading within Australian children.
How are the books chosen?
The books on the RRL and RRL-A have been selected because they are popular, award-winning, well-written and immediately interesting. Some of the books chosen are also recognised literary classics.
How are the books arranged?
The RRL and RRL-A books are divided into twelve sections, broadly corresponding to the levels of the Kumon English Programme. The RRL features books from the 'Read Together' level (Kumon English 7A-3A) through to 'Further Reading' (Kumon Level J and above). The RRL-A includes books from 'Read Together' through to 'Level C'.
Like the Kumon worksheets, the RRL is designed so that each student can start reading books at a comfortable level. The student then progresses step by step to those books that are a little more challenging.
Read Together
This section of the list was created for children who haven't started reading independently yet. The fifty books selected are particularly suitable to being read aloud to children. The books are arranged by level of difficulty, with the simplest book listed at number one and the most difficult at number fifty.
Level 2A to Level C
The thirty books in each level from Level 2A to Level C are also listed in order of difficulty, with the easiest at number one. For Level D and above, genre icons are included to help readers find the books that interest them most.
Further Reading
The thirty books in this section of the list are recommended for more confident, mature readers. They include classic stories and well-known works from a range of genres and periods in history, and are listed in order of difficulty.
A Wide Range of Books for a Wide Range of Readers!
The RRLs contains something for everyone. Each level includes books aimed at younger readers, as well as books more suited to older, more mature readers. Not every book will be appropriate for every student, but everyone will find something he or she will enjoy!
